Global consultation begins for next Archbishop of Canterbury

The consultation, which began on February 7, runs until March 28.
The Crown Nominations Commission (CNC) will use the results of the consultation to help discern whom God may be calling to the ministry of Archbishop of Canterbury.
The CNC is a 20-member body, including 17 voting members and up to three non-voting members. Five of the voting members are representatives from the Anglican Communion.
The 105th Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, left office on January 7. He resigned on November 12 over the Church of England’s handling of the case of an abuser of many boys and young men.
Most of his duties were passed to the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, until a permanent successor is appointed.
The public consultation runs alongside consultation with key stakeholders from in and around the Church.
“Every response helps us better understand the qualities that the next Archbishop should have to meet the needs of the Church today and in the years to come,” the Church of England stated.
The themes that emerge through this consultation will sit alongside the “Statement of Needs” produced by the Diocese of Canterbury, as well as other information provided by the National Church and Anglican Communion.
The CNC will convene for its first meeting in May, followed by two further meetings – one in July and one in September. Through these, the Commission will agree the “Role Profile” and “Person Specification” for the next Archbishop of Canterbury, and will discern the long list. A shortlist will then be developed and candidates will be interviewed.
It is not possible to apply for the role of Archbishop of Canterbury.
