Catholic sites among 100 locations in NZ pilgrimage book

‘Pilgrimage Aotearoa | Haerenga Tapu Aotearoa: Your Guide to 100 New Zealand Sites’ by Jenny Boyack and John Hornblow

About a dozen Catholic sites feature in a new book on places of pilgrimage across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Pilgrimage Aotearoa | Haerenga Tapu Aotearoa: Your Guide to 100 New Zealand Sites, by Jenny Boyack and John Hornblow, offers readers a guide to 100 unique sites in New Zealand, blending history, culture and spirituality.

The book invites people on a journey of reflection and discovery, uncovering the stories that make these places significant to the nation’s identity and soul.

Some of the Catholic sites listed are Pompallier Printery Russell; Totara Point, North Hokianga; Hāta Maria/St Mary’s Church, North Hokianga; St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Auckland; Rangiaowhia Catholic Mission; Jerusalem/Hiruhārama, Whanganui River; St Mary’s Catholic Church/Pukekaraka, Ōtaki; St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, Wellington; Our Lady’s Home of Compassion, Island Bay; St Patrick’s Church and Mary MacKillop Cottage, Arrowtown; St Patrick’s Basilica, Oamaru.

Also listed is a statue of Dame Whina Cooper, in Panguru, North Hokianga. Dame Joy Cowley’s poem “On the Road” is included in the book.

Publicity for the book states that it “offers deeper insight into Aotearoa’s heritage and landscape through reflective travel”.

In-depth descriptions of each location’s spiritual, historical and cultural context are included.

The book also contains practical tips for planning and navigating pilgrimages, as well as reflections and prompts for personal growth and contemplation.

Authors Jenny Boyack and John Hornblow have been involved with pilgrimages for many years in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas.

In a review of the book in Tui Motu InterIslands magazine, Thomas and William Hassan Walker found the book useful for visiting sites in Dunedin.

“This book would appeal to people who love to walk, who are curious about Aotearoa, and who might not be keen or able to go on an overseas pilgrimage, but still want the experience,” they write.

Pilgrimages within New Zealand are also a key initiative during the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year 2025. Find out more about local celebrations and pilgrimages on the NZCBC’s Jubilee page here.
