This year’s competition was hosted by Sacred Heart College in Glendowie. Some 250 students from 16 Catholic colleges in the Auckland Diocese took part in the 2025 event, which took place on May 1. Students participated in senior and junior Scripture proclamation in both English and Te Reo Māori, junior prepared speech, senior oratory and waiata (singing).
St Mary’s College principal Sarah Dwan wrote in a college newsletter that the standard of competition is always very high.
“All of our students participated very strongly and came away with some great results,” Ms Dwan said.
The principal praised the following St Mary’s student achievements: Te Au Āio Ani Meriti – 1st equal Senior Te Reo Māori Scripture Proclamation; Tui Rererangi Aitken – 2nd Junior Te Reo Māori Scripture Proclamation; Zoe Bailey – 3rd Senior Oratory; Blossom-Anne Johansson – 3rd Junior Proclamation.
“After a very long wait for the prizegiving, St Mary’s College retained the overall Pompallier Shield for the third year running,” Ms Dwan said.
She thanked those who had worked with the students before the competition.
Sacred Heart College closed early on May 1 because of the event, which was held with the death of Pope Francis as a backdrop.
