St Patrick’s College Silverstream has won the 2025 O’Shea Shield speech and drama competition for Catholic colleges in Wellington Archdiocese and Palmerston North Diocese.

The competition, hosted by Cullinane College in Whanganui from May 15-17, saw at least 280 students competing from 17 colleges. Three colleges finished equal second in the competition – Sacred Heart Girls’ College in New Plymouth, St Patrick’s College in Wellington and St Mary’s College.

The students competed in oratory, junior prepared speech, English Scripture reading, Te Reo Scripture reading, impromptu speech, religious drama, debating and religious questions categories. The competition this year was based around a theme of Pilgrims of Hope, which is associated with the 2025 Jubilee Year.

In a Facebook post, Cullinane College thanked all those who took part in the O’Shea Shield for 2025.

“It was a pleasure to host you all and we hope that you have had a safe journey home'” the post read.

“[The] O’Shea Shield is more than just a competition where students come together to showcase their abilities, it is where we gather to reflect on our shared Catholic values and form friendships and bonds.

“This event would not be possible if not for the hard work and dedication of our staff, our amazing students, our parent body and our community. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves and go home with lasting memories.”

The competition has been held yearly since its inception in 1946 except in 1947, due to a polio outbreak, and 2020-21, due to COVID-19.

“Catholic schools have always been known for their interest and work in public speaking; it kind of goes with the territory, I think,” O’Shea Shield co-ordinator Kathy Ryan said.
