The restoration project at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Wellington received an award in the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Wellington region heritage category. The restoration was described as “exemplary” and as marking “the culmination of a long and determined journey for the cathedral community”.
The architects on the project were TEAM Architects Wellington and Paul Cummack Conservation Architect in association.
The citation stated that this was a “highly technical and complex heritage project” and it “required immense care, deep architectural knowledge and sensitive judgement”.
“Seismic upgrades, moisture remediation and fabric repairs have been deftly integrated to retain the integrity of this Category I landmark. Inside, the spaces have been subtly rebalanced – calm, uplifting and newly aligned with both historic and contemporary liturgical practice. Unexpected discoveries were thoughtfully embraced, adding richness to the cathedral’s ongoing story. The result is a dignified, enduring renewal of Wellington’s Catholic heart.”
In Auckland, the restoration of St Mary’s Old Convent Chapel in Ponsonby received an award in the Auckland region heritage category. The architects were Salmon Reed Architects Ltd.
The citation stated that “this sensitive restoration of a landmark historic chapel” on New Street in Ponsonby “has faithfully returned a cherished built taonga to its original form”.
“Exquisite leadlight windows, Gothic Revival timber detailing and the chapel’s original heritage colour scheme have all been reinstated as part of the extensive restoration works. Honouring the chapel’s strong spiritual, social and cultural values and harnessing the talents of skilled artisans and tradespeople, the architects have ensured this historically significant building continues to serve the St Mary’s community as a special place of worship, education and gathering.”
The Mission House project at Sacred Heart College in Lower Hutt received a Wellington regional award in the education category.
