People with Catholic links receive King’s Birthday honours

Fergus More of Invercargill was awarded the King’s Service Medal for services to the community and the law.
Mr More has been a lawyer in Invercargill for more than 44 years, working as a partner of Scholefield Law and with many not-for-profits in the community. Most of his work is advocating for the children and youth of Southland, some pro bono. He is recognised as one of the leading youth court and counsel for children advocates within Southland.
He was a lawyer for the Verdon College Board of Trustees. Additionally, Mr More has served on several other organisations including the St Mary’s Basilica Parish Council.
Dr Malcolm Mulholland of Palmerston North was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to health and Māori.
Dr Mulholland (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa) is a prominent Māori academic who has been contributing to New Zealand society through governance and education, through roles with Massey University, since the late 2000s and more recently through health advocacy.
He has published a range of work on Māori history, education, race relations and social politics, including A History of St Joseph’s Māori Girls’ College and Beneath the Māori Moon: An Illustrated History of Māori Rugby.
Dr Christopher Longhurst of Napier was made a Companion of the King’s Service Order for services to survivors of abuse in care. Dr Longhurst has dedicated more than 20 years advocating for redress for survivors and recognition of abuse in faith-based Institutions.
Dr Longhurst is the founder and national leader of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) Aotearoa New Zealand, established in 2019, part of a global peer support network for victims and survivors of faith-based and institutional abuse. He is an academic at Te Kupenga – Catholic Theological College.
