Personnel from the Royal Australian Navy have rolled up their sleeves and helped out at the Compassion Soup Kitchen in Wellington.

A post on the soup kitchen’s Facebook page expressed thanks to the eight “incredible volunteers” who gave of their time on June 6.

“With great energy and team spirit, they helped chop vegetables, prepare meals, organise delivery food bags and support us in many other ways,” the post stated.

“Their willingness to lend a hand and give their time meant so much to our team and the community we serve. Thank you for showing up, supporting our mission and making a real impact in our community.”

The Navy personnel, from HMAS Canberra, the Royal Australian Navy’s flagship, were in Wellington as part of a celebration of a sister city partnership between Wellington and Canberra. Ship’s Company from the Canberra took part in a series of events that included a naval parade through the city, volunteering at the soup kitchen and in community clean-ups, and an AFL match against their New Zealand counterparts. The clean-ups took place at the Wellington Botanic Garden, Otari-Wilton’s Bush, Wellington Zoo, Wellington Harbour and Owhiro Bay.

An agreement was signed to foster closer cooperation between capital cities in the Pacific region, and a business mission from Canberra met with New Zealand representatives.

Australian Capital Territory Chief Minister Andrew Barr led the delegation to Wellington.

“Our sister city relationship with Wellington is one of genuine friendship and mutual respect. It’s built on a shared commitment to sustainability, creativity and inclusive growth,” Mr Barr said.

“From climate action and urban planning to arts and innovation, our two capital cities face many of the same challenges and opportunities. This visit allows us to share knowledge, deepen collaboration and celebrate what we’ve already achieved together,” he said.
