Wellington cathedral launches monthly late night Mass

The first such celebration took place on June 6, and it was attended by young people from throughout the region. Wellington Archdiocese youth coordinator Regina Fernandes wrote about it in the first edition of the new format of WelCom.
Mass was celebrated in the Sacred Heart Cathedral chapel, and the only light came from candles around the room, creating a calm and beautiful atmosphere. After the Mass, most people stayed and got to know each other, with conversations and laughter filling the cathedral’s foyer in minutes.
The idea for a late night Mass for young people came from the candlelit Mass at Lille Catholic University in France, which brings together hundreds of young people on a Tuesday at 10pm. That initiative inspired Archbishop Paul Martin SM and Fr Patrick Bridgman to start something similar in Wellington.
For many, where their parish may be small or the schedule means they are usually in one spot, this Mass offers the chance to not only attend Mass with young people from across Wellington, but to meet and develop friendships with young Catholics. It is hoped that numbers will grow so that the cathedral will be filled for future Masses.
The next late night Mass for young people is at 8pm on July 4 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
