Amalgamation process for Nelson-Tasman parishes started
Archbishop Paul Martin, SM (NZCBC)
In a letter to parishioners of Holy Family Parish, Nelson, and Our Lady of the Bays Parish in Tasman last month, Archbishop Martin said the number of parishioners attending Sunday Mass in these parishes has been growing and placing a strain on the ability of churches to meet the needs of the people.
“To address these needs, I have directed your pastoral councils and finance committees to begin the amalgamation process for your two parishes, and the development of a single large church in the Stoke-Richmond area,” Archbishop Martin wrote.
“One larger parish will provide new leadership opportunities, sharing of the gifts and ministries of the people of the two parishes, and more sustainable use of resources. All these benefits are needed for effective evangelisation.”
Archbishop Martin noted that changes to parishes and churches – “where we gather to celebrate Mass and the sacraments, and where we mark so many milestones in our lives” – were never easy.
“They involve letting go of structures and buildings that have been central to our lives and that of our families, often for several generations,” he continued.
“Letting go of what we have now requires generosity, hope and confidence that the Lord will guide us on this journey, as he has done for us, and for those who have gone before us in your parishes.”
The archbishop asked for prayer for the parishes and the future parish. He requested that people also ask “the Holy Spirit to guide us as decisions are made and implemented”.
“Please pray also for one another as the journey will be harder for some than for others, and care for the communities involved must be an integral part of these developments,” he added. “Be assured of my prayers and support for you as you move this process.”
