The fire broke out at the church on Great North Road in Avondale in the early hours of July 14. Police say they are seeking the public’s help to identify a man captured on security cameras. The person “may be able to assist us with our inquiries”, Police said.

“If this is you, or you know who this man is, please update us online now or call 105,” Police said. Information could also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

At its peak, there were seven Fire and Emergency crews at the scene.

In a Facebook post, the Catholic Diocese of Auckland stated that St Mary’s Parish and School in Avondale “have been overwhelmed by the incredible outpouring of love and support for their community this week” following the fire.

“Heartfelt thanks to each and every person who has phoned or sent an email or text,” the post stated.

With no access to learning onsite at St Mary’s last week, Christ the King School in Owairaka opened its hall for the St Mary’s School community. Principal Billy Hadnett and the Christ the King School staff, school and parish were thanked for their hospitality.

Avondale parishioners were encouraged to join Masses at nearby Christ the King Church in Owairaka over the weekend. In a video on Monday afternoon, Avondale parish priest Fr Andrew Matthew thanked the Owairaka community for its welcome.
