Progress on future of Hāto Petera College site
(Hāto Petera)
With the support of Kāhui Kaumātua (Group of Elders) and Auckland Bishop Steve Lowe, the Hāto Petera Interim Governance Group has shared the Tūāpapa, the Terms of Reference for the period commencing October 1, 2025, and concluding on September 30, 2031.
The Tūāpapa establishes Te Waka o Hāto Petera Wāwāhi Ara who will work with the bishop and Kāhui Kaumatua in a spirit of cooperation and trust to deliver the mahi (work). The Wāwāhi Ara will recommend to the bishop a long-term education service, building works for a chapel, marae and community facilities, sources of funding and other proposals that the bishop asks of the Wāwāhi Ara in accordance with the vision.
The Tūāpapa was introduced at a Hui-ā-Whānau on the Feast of Hāto Petera (Sunday, June 29, 2025).
Wāwāhi Ara members will contribute a wide variety of skills and diversity of thought to the Hāto Petera repurposing kaupapa (project). They will enable good governance through strong interpersonal and relationship management skills, built on tika, pono, aroha. This will include working positively with the Kāhui Kaumatua and the bishop.
Hato Pētera College closed in August, 2018. The Catholic Diocese of Auckland has been working closely with Hato Pētera whānau and the Kaumatua Group to restore the mauri (spirit) of the old school site through a re-purposing project in the spirit of the Crown grant.
An Interim Governance Group was formed to develop long-term outcomes.
