St Kevin’s College in Oamaru has won the annual Bishop’s Shield public speaking and drama competition between Catholic secondary schools in Dunedin Diocese.

This year’s event took place at St Kevin’s College from August 8-10. A media statement from Dunedin Diocese congratulated St Kevin’s on their win, adding that the overall talent was outstanding and every participant was to be congratulated.

A Facebook post from St Kevin’s stated that “our students shone on and off the stage”.

“Their performances, team spirit and respect for one another was outstanding and we couldn’t be prouder. A beautiful Mass at the Basilica during the weekend brought all the schools together in prayer and worship, making the event even more special.

“A huge thank you to all students, staff, judges and schools who made this event so special – and to our amazing St Kevin’s team, congratulations on an incredible achievement!”

The theme this year’s competition was “Pilgrims of Hope”, taking on the theme for the Church’s global Year of Jubilee. This was reflected in several category topics.

The theme for senior drama was: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)

The prepared speech topic was: “With reference to Spe Salvi – Saved in Hope and amid the current global contexts, how can we be ‘Pilgrims of Hope’?”

And the impromptu speech topic was: “What does it mean to be a Pilgrim of Hope in a world of despair?”

St Kevin’s College won the overall Bishop’s Shield contest with 35 points. The award for runner-up, the Marist Centennial Plate, went to Trinity Catholic College from Dunedin with 24 points.

Among the competition categories were debating (junior and senior), prepared speech, impromptu speech, Scripture (junior and senior) and drama (junior and senior).
