Catholic publications from NZ win Australasian awards

Kete Korero, the magazine of Hamilton Diocese, was announced as the Most Improved Publication at the awards dinner on September 4. Judges noted that Kete Korero was “honoured for its remarkable transformation, with vibrant new design, fresh editorial tone and greater inclusivity”.
The former newspaper for Wellington Archdiocese and Palmerston North Diocese, WelCom, won the Best News Content award for “a powerful six-page feature on the homecoming to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, capturing history, fundraising, interviews and striking images”.
WelCom also took out the award for Best Original Photograph for “Pukekaraka Leads World Rosary”, which judges said captured “prayer, community and devotion in a striking composition”.
Tui Motu InterIslands magazine was acknowledged several times. Winner: Climate and Environment Content; Runner-Up: Best Headline; Highly Commended: Best Front Page (Print); Highly Commended: Best Layout and Design (Print).
More than 50 Catholic media and communications professionals gathered for the annual awards night, recognising excellence in Catholic media across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.
Delegates had gathered for the two days prior for their annual conference, focused on the theme, “Messengers of Hope: Communicating the truth, goodness and beauty of our faith”.
De La Salle Brothers provincial Br Peter Bray, a New Zealander, was the guest speaker at the dinner, highlighting his experience as vice-chancellor at the University of Bethlehem in the Holy Land.
The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference daily e-newsletter, CathNews, received the top award, the Bishop Kennedy Memorial Trophy.
