A new Mary Prayer Garden that will be a place of peace for many has been blessed and opened at Aquinas College in Tauranga.

At the end of the third school term, Fr Arnold Punzalan led a Rite of Blessing during a dedication ceremony, officially opening the garden, which sits between the college’s chapel and quadrangle.

Designed as a place of peace, beauty and reflection, the garden offers students, staff and whānau a quiet spot to pause, pray and find strength in God’s presence.

At its heart stands a statue of Mary, giving a reminder of her loving presence and her example of faith, courage and trust in God. Nearby, a handcrafted rosary sculpture invites onlookers to prayer. Surrounding plantings, chosen for their traditional association with Mary, will bloom in time to further enrich the space.

At the opening, Aquinas College principal Matt Dalton praised the “vision, dedication and hard work” of deputy principal (Middle School) Susan van Zyl and property manager Jason Yorke, who brought the long-dreamed-of project to life. Beyond commissioning the statue and organising specialist services, the pair also added their own craftsmanship; Mr Yorke built planter-box seating and Ms van Zyl created the rosary sculpture.

The vision for the garden is that it will be a place of peace, a reminder of Mary’s love and a call to prayer.
