Passionist deacon ordained in Blenheim

A young man who first discovered his vocation while working in his great-uncle’s garden was ordained to the diaconate in Blenheim recently.

Deacon Joseph Nguyễn Văn Tuấn CP was ordained to the diaconate by Wellington Archbishop Paul Martin SM on February 28 at a Mass attended by clergy, parishioners and members of his family, who had travelled from Vietnam.

Born in Vietnam, Deacon Tuấn, who is known as “TJ”, first became aware of his vocation in 2010. While he was working in the garden in a parish where his great-uncle was the parish priest, he met the Passionists there – and this encounter led to his future decision to join the Passionist Congregation.

The ordination at St Mary’s Church in Blenheim was described as an incredible moment marking a commitment to serving the Lord and growing the Lord’s kingdom here in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.

Deacon Tuấn will stay with the Passionist community in Blenheim. He will work pastorally with the Passionist priests in the role of deacon in the Star of the Sea Parish in Marlborough.

Faithful to the charism of St Paul of the Cross, the mission of the Passionists is to keep alive in the world the love of Jesus crucified as seen in his sacred passion. That mission is rooted in prayerful community life and is expressed in collaborative ministry to the people of God in all walks of life, especially to the poor and suffering.
