“Multiple communities in Benue, Kaduna and Nasarawa states report[ed] killings, abductions and extensive destruction,” stated International Christian Concern, which assists persecuted Christians.
The Lagos-based Vanguard reported that a Protestant church and a Catholic parish were attacked on Easter Sunday in Ariko, which is located in Kaduna State. A local government official told Vanguard: “The attackers came in large numbers. They surrounded the area and began shooting sporadically at worshippers. Several people were killed, while many others were taken away into the bush.”
The Nigerian army claimed that it had rescued 31 Christians who were kidnapped in Ariko, according to a BBC report. Reuters reported that local Christians disputed the army’s claim.
The Easter violence followed a massacre at Jos on Palm Sunday that left 30 people dead.
In the affected states, witnesses consistently described attackers arriving on motorcycles and on foot, often in large numbers and operating for extended periods before the arrival of security forces, International Christian Concern stated.
“The attacks against Christians during Holy Week in Nigeria are horrific,” said Shawn Wright, president of International Christian Concern.
“Dozens of our brothers and sisters were killed as they remembered Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and celebrated the hope that comes from his miraculous Resurrection. As one Body of Christ, we pray for the survivors and families who are walking through unimaginable grief.”
Authorities have not yet released the official death toll for the Easter attacks. Local leaders in affected communities have called for increased security presence and faster response times in rural areas.
