Police seek return of Rawene church bell

The bell is believed to have been taken from the church on Parnell St, Rawene sometime between July 15 and 22. Far North Area Commander Inspector John Fagan said the bell had been housed in a small shelter to the left of the church’s front entrance.

“The church building itself was locked and secure at the time of the theft,” Inspector Fagan said. “This is a substantial and distinctive item, measuring more than half a metre in height and diameter.

“It’s likely the removal would have required considerable effort and the use of a vehicle.”

The theft was discovered on July 22 when a member of the church went to ring the bell and found it was gone.

Parishioner Joseph Land said the church was built in 1917 with two towers, one of which housed the bell. When the towers became unsafe and had to be removed, the bell was placed in storage, Radio New Zealand reported.

“But somewhere around year 2000, restoration was done inside the church. At that time the bell was put into its present place outside, easily accessible to be rung again.”

Parishioner Patricia Potter said the church was keen to have the bell returned.

“But we certainly don’t want vengeance, and we don’t want retribution or anything like that. Our pathway would be forgiveness. That’s part of our faith, of living our faith every day.”

Police are appealing directly to whoever has the bell to arrange for it to be returned.

“The congregation hopes this treasured community item can be returned without further damage or loss,” Inspector Fagan said.

Police also want to hear from anyone who saw suspicious activity around the church between July 15 and 22 or knows where the bell is.
