Oak planted by foundress protected in new village

Construction has been completed at Notre Dame Living, which has 23 single-level homes designed for accessibility with layouts aimed at reducing the risk of accidents.

The site of the modern village for people aged 55 and over was previously a convent for the Mission Sisters, and the name of the complex reflects that history.

An information pamphlet stated: “Originally acquired from Ngati Te Ata Waiohua, it became home to the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions in 1885. Over the following century, the Sisters established a convent, founded St Mary’s School and Sacred Heart College, taught at St Joseph’s School and played a vital role in education, pastoral care and community service across Pukekohe.”

The site, which includes the protected oak tree, was sold in 2022. Sr Margaret Monaghan RNDM joined parishioners gathered in the grounds of the former convent for a site blessing and farewell a year ago.

This year, Associate Health Minister and Minister for Seniors Casey Costello said developments such as Notre Dame are important in meeting the needs of New Zealand’s ageing population.

“These options give people the chance to downsize and still stay in the community they know and love,” she said. “People want to live in a really suitable, accessible home with a safe bathroom that’s well heated and easy to maintain, not to injure themselves by tripping when stepping over the front steps.”

Focusing on healthy housing for retirees has a domino effect, benefiting both older residents and the wider community, Ms Costello added.
