The Holy Father will visit Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida in Uruguay from November 6-8; Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Luján in Argentina from November 8-11; and Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco and Pucallpa in Peru from November 11-17.

Uruguay, where Catholics make up only 36 per cent of the population, is the country with the lowest number of Catholics in all of Latin America.

Peru has the highest proportion of Catholics of any country in Latin America, accounting for 67 per cent of its 32 million people according to a report by the Pew Research Centre published in January, The Tablet reported. The same report stated that 58 per cent of Argentina’s 46 million people are Catholic.

Argentina was the homeland of Leo’s predecessor, Pope Francis, although the late Pope did not visit his homeland during his 12-year pontificate.

Peru is a country which Pope Leo knows very well; he first arrived as a missionary in the 1980s, later serving as a bishop there and acquiring citizenship.

This journey to Latin America, which will see the Pope visit 10 cities over 11 days, will be his sixth international trip. The schedule for the journey will be released in due course.

The Latin America trip will follow Pope Leo’s September 25-28 visit to France, the Associated Press reported.
