NZ online project on Catholic beliefs, practices launched

Mr McCarthy, the founding editor of NZ Catholic newspaper in 1996 who spent decades working in journalism, recently started a new, free Substack publication titled “Fathoming the Faith”.
Among topics addressed so far in the project are “Where Mary died is controversial”, “Where did the ‘preferential option for the poor’ come from?”, “The Church has a three-point formula for marriage”, “Real life miracles still happen”, and “How Last Supper liturgy became the Catholic Mass”.
“Some of my weekly posts relate specifically to New Zealand, but most should be of general interest,” Mr McCarthy said.
The Substack project began by accident, he said.
“A priest who was preparing some talks for a Catholic group asked me to suggest topics. ‘You could explain how what happened at the Last Supper developed over the centuries to today’s Catholic Mass’,” Mr McCarthy suggested.
The priest “pursed his lips for a moment, then shook his head. ‘Too hard,’ he replied.
“So I decided to do some research myself. Then other topics suggested themselves.”
