National Suzanne Aubert centennial Mass on October 4

(Sisters of Compassion)

New Zealand’s Catholic bishops will celebrate a special commemorative Mass in Wellington next month marking 100 years since the passing into eternal life of Venerable Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert.

The Home of Compassion whānau are hosting the commemorative Mass at St Mary of the Angels Church, Wellington, starting at 2pm on Sunday, October 4. The Mass will reflect Meri Hōhepa’s deep commitment to working among Māori.

Throughout 2026, whānau from the Home of Compassion are holding a number of events to mark 100 years since the death of their founder. Meri Hōhepa’s funeral at St Mary of the Angels on October 5, 1926 was reported to have been the largest ever held for a woman in New Zealand – such was the esteem in which she was held for her groundbreaking leadership in social welfare initiatives and caring for the most vulnerable.

At each gathering in Rau Tau Pūaroha | Celebrate Compassion 2026, a centennial candle has been present to symbolise Meri Hōhepa’s enduring influence and her continued presence.
