St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College in south Auckland is calling for safe walking routes to their site as Auckland Council consults on a greenway connection plan for the area.

The college made an appeal on Facebook for advocacy for “safe travel to St Ignatius”.

“Auckland Council is consulting on the draft Drury Greenways Plan, and we need your help to advocate for safe walking routes to St Ignatius,” a college Facebook post stated.

“The proposed plan does not appear to provide a clear, safe pedestrian connection between the [train] station and our college.”

The college called on supporters to advocate for a “safe, direct walking route between St Ignatius and Ngākōroa train station”, and “the inclusion of this connection in the Drury Greenways Plan, with appropriate pedestrian infrastructure to support our ākonga (students)”.

The college also called for “Infrastructure that anticipates the college’s growth and enables our young people to travel safely and independently by foot and public transport”.

The college asked supporters to “submit feedback to Auckland Council, highlighting why this connection is essential for our ākonga and our growing college community”.

The draft Drury Greenway Plan proposes “walking and cycling connections between neighbourhoods, parks, schools, community facilities, town centres and other key destinations”, as well as “connections to streams and reserves to create greener, more attractive routes for people to enjoy”.

The draft plan covers the area from Auranga through to Drury East and south towards Hunua Views and Ramarama. It aims to provide a long-term vision for future investment and planning in Drury.

Consultation closed on October 22. Feedback is being considered by the Council’s project team until the end of November. This information will be used to refine the plan. The plan will then be presented to the Franklin Local Board.
