Workshop explores family-centred sacramental preparation

(Catholic Diocese of Hamilton)

A family-centred approach to preparing for the sacraments was explored at a recent workshop in Hamilton.

At the heart of the workshop, titled “Let’s Get Practical”, was a question: How can sacramental preparation become more than a series of sessions for children?

Eighteen participants representing nine parishes across Hamilton Diocese gathered at the Chanel Centre for the workshop, with a group attending from Pukekohe in Auckland. Presented by Alison Carroll and Sue Forsyth, the day combined practical ideas, shared experiences and an opportunity to explore a family-centred approach to preparing for the sacraments.

The day began with a reminder of the bigger picture: the goal is to make disciples. Sacramental preparation is not simply about getting children ready to receive a sacrament, people heard. It is an opportunity to help children and their families encounter Jesus, grow in prayer, participate more fully in the Mass and become connected with the life of their parish.

A particular focus was supporting parents as the first educators of their children in the faith. While parents may be eager to pass on their faith, they do not always feel confident about how to do this. Practical ways to pray together, talk about faith at home and build relationships with other parish families can make a real difference.

Participants explored the practicalities of running a sacramental programme, including welcoming families, communicating effectively, building a team and involving parish priests. There was also plenty of opportunity to share ideas, discuss common challenges and consider what works in different parish settings.

A highlight was exploring PACT (Preparing and Celebrating Together), an interactive sacramental preparation programme that brings parents and children together on their journey of faith. PACT includes sessions for both children and adults, with opportunities for prayer, discussion, Scripture and activities, as well as practical ways for families to continue their faith formation at home.

Participants also experienced some of the programme’s activities for themselves, including a reflection on Reconciliation as God’s way of mending hearts.
