Hamilton mayor thanks Christians for service to city

The breakfast last week, organised by Hamilton Pastors and Christian Leaders in partnership with the New Zealand Christian Network, attracted more than 300 people, including many Catholics. The event had the theme “Anchored and Alive”, taken from Hebrews 10:23-25.

Mr Macindoe said this passage “exhorts us to encourage one another towards love and good works, and to keep meeting together”.

Therefore, he appreciated having an opportunity “to thank all who were present for their considerable service and contributions to our city over many years”.

The morning started with powerful worship led by a band formed from six different churches, demonstrating unity as the foundation for the breakfast. The ethnically diverse, multi-denominational gathering brought together Christians from across Hamilton and beyond, with a shared desire to strengthen unity among churches, show compassion to those in need and celebrate the freedom to worship and praise God in the city.

Rather than simply listening to prayers from the platform, attendees were invited to turn to people they did not know and pray together. For many, this became a powerful and personal expression of unity in Jesus Christ, as people from different churches and backgrounds joined their voices in prayer.

There was a special focus on young people at the breakfast. Three young people were given the opportunity to lead prayers, including Asher Nasire from St John’s College, Hamilton, bringing their voices and perspectives to the gathering.

The breakfast was also a time of connection and encouragement, with attendees enjoying the opportunity to meet old friends of faith and build new relationships across the city’s Christian community.
