Church impacted by change on North Shore’s busiest road

St Mary’s parish in Northcote, Auckland, is on Onewa Rd, which carries 30,000 vehicles a day.
Auckland Transport said Onewa Rd would in future have broken yellow lines on both sides of the road from Birkenhead Ave to Lake Rd, “which will make it a 24/7 clearway”.
The road already has a partial clearway on either side, including T3 lanes, but AT said the current situation was disjointed and disrupted the flow of traffic.
The change will mean no vehicles can stop or park on the busy stretch of road at any time.
AT said it would work with St Mary’s Church to find parking solutions on side streets for parishioners, and install new parking information signs on Seaview Ave near the church.
“Making Onewa Rd a full-time clearway will help vehicles move more efficiently every day of the week, including weekends,” AT said.
It would also reduce the number of crashes related to queuing and obstruction, which made up nearly half of the 140 crashes reported on Onewa Rd from 2019 to 2023, AT said.
The clearway plan has been endorsed by the Kaipātiki Local Board, and work to implement it is expected to take place over the summer school holidays.
Some business owners on Onewa Rd have expressed concern about the change, fearing it will reduce the number of customers.
