The restoration work on the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Restoration by TEAM Architects Wellington Ltd and Paul Cummack Conservation in association was placed on the shortlist in the Heritage category.

And the Trinity Catholic College (Dunedin) Music and Art Suites by McCoy and Wixon Architects was shortlisted in the Education category.

Overall, 61 projects across 12 categories were shortlisted. The two projects involving Catholic buildings won Local Architecture Awards in their regions.

“We were really pleased with the diverse range of projects that made the shortlist this year,” said national jury convenor Craig Moller from Moller Architects.

“It was especially heartening to see such strength in the Heritage and Small Project Architecture categories. Architects make a big difference in the outcome of any project, but especially for small projects with size and scale constraints, their creativity and impact were on full display.”

All shortlisted projects are being visited by the jury, headed by Mr Moller, and including Beth Cameron from Makers of Architecture, Nicola Herbst of Herbst Architects and Ilana Freadman from Freadman White Architects in Melbourne. The tour started on August 11.

The winners of the New Zealand Architecture Awards will be announced at the annual awards event on November 20 at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre.
