Bishop Adams to address sacred music conference
Bishop John Adams (NZCBC)
The New Zealand Sacred Music Conference will be held at St Michael’s Church in Remuera, Auckland, from November 21-23. The event coincides with the November 22 feast of St Cecilia, patroness of musicians.
“This dynamic weekend is designed to provide resources to anyone involved in the music ministry at your local parish, school, chaplaincy or youth group,” the conference website stated.
Bishop Adams will give a keynote address and will also deliver the closing address.
The website stated that prior to his priestly ordination in 2003, “Bishop Adams dedicated 25 years to his role as a chorister for the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Christchurch, nurturing his passion for sacred music”.
He will preside at Mass on the Solemnity of Christ the King at St Michael’s.
Among the keynote speakers at the conference are Cameron Bhashkar, musical director of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Palmerston North; Stephen Smith, director of the Jubilate Deo Programme in Australia; and Dr Robert Loretz. Workshop options include “Choral Composition”, “Gregorian Chant”, “Starting a New Choir” and “Eastern Catholic Sacred Music”.
The conference costs $60 for adults and $15 for students.
A sacred music prayer evening featuring choirs from throughout New Zealand will take place at St Michael’s on the evening of November 22. Admission is free.
