Bishop gifts books on Church teaching to students

Auckland Bishop Steve Lowe has gifted copies of books on the Church’s teaching to year 7 and 8 students in his diocese.

In the Jubilee Year, with the theme of Pilgrims of Hope, Bishop Lowe is providing every Year 7 student in Auckland Diocese a copy of YOUCAT and every Year 8 student a copy of DOCAT. These are resources to inspire faith and action, and to share with the students’ families.

On November 18, Bishop Steve Lowe blessed the books at the Pompallier Diocesan Centre before they were to be distributed to schools.

An Auckland Diocese Facebook post stated: “May these books encourage our young people to grow in faith and live out the Gospel with joy.”

The YOUCAT is based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, published in 1992, but is presented in a style and rhythm directed to young people. The YOUCAT was first distributed at World Youth Day in Madrid in 2011 as a way to help extend the experience and knowledge of the faith into young pilgrims’ homes.

Pope Francis launched a new edition of YOUCAT last year, inviting young readers to “love this book, because it is the fruit of love”.

“You will discover that it has no other intentions than to awaken or reawaken in you a great love for Jesus. This is its only purpose,” he said.

DOCAT, which presents the Church’s social teaching in a creative style more attractive and comprehensible to youth, was launched at World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow, Poland. It was given to young pilgrims there by Pope Francis in the form of an app. DOCAT was produced by the same team that created YOUCAT.
