This month, the Diocese has hosted Spiritus – a three-day formation experience for more than 120 Catholic teachers and leaders primarily from the Diocese, but also some from across Aotearoa New Zealand. This programme is part of the journey of establishing Catholic Schools Youth Ministry International (CSYMI) in the Diocese.
CSYMI’s vision is to inspire, renew and equip Catholic schools as centres of evangelisation. Its mission is to help school leaders, teachers and students develop a living relationship with Jesus and a strong Catholic identity through ongoing formation and participation in the life and mission of the Church.
Spiritus Diocesan Implementation is a strategic Catholic school mission renewal programme and formation programme. It seeks to build the confidence and capacity of leaders and educators to lead the renewal of Catholic schools as centres of evangelisation.
Implementation is built around the two high-impact strategies of leader and teacher formation for mission, as well as student formation for peer-to-peer youth ministry. It consists of three interrelated phases implemented over a three- to four-year period.
Student leaders from some of the schools in Christchurch Diocese have begun leading junior retreats and prayer experiences in their schools and local primary schools. The Spiritus programme has provided reflection on Catholic schools being centres of evangelisation and prayer opportunities for participants.
CSYMI is being implemented in more than 150 Catholic schools across Australia. It is also providing teacher and student formation programmes and resources in East Africa, Oceania and the United Kingdom.
