Catholic churches in the North and South Island are among the venues for the ecumenical World Day of Prayer event on March 6.

The World Day of Prayer is an international movement of Christian people in many different traditions that have a continuing relationship of prayer and service.

People from various denominations gather in one another’s churches to celebrate, using a worship service prepared by women of a different country each year. Women, men and young people share the language, customs and music of that country.

The programme for 2026 was prepared by WDP Committee of Nigeria and adapted for use in New Zealand by World Day of Prayer Aotearoa New Zealand. The theme for 2026 is “I will give you rest: Come.”

The prayer materials from Nigeria bring an invitation drawn from Matthew 11:28-30. At a time when people worldwide are carrying heavy burdens, women from Nigeria offer profound insights into finding rest in God.

Among the Aotearoa New Zealand locations where Catholic churches are hosting services on March 6 are Ruakaka, Dargaville, Mt Albert, Waiheke Island, Te Kuiti, Inglewood, Kaponga and Masterton (Chanel College) in the North Island.

In the South Island, Catholic churches in Oxford, Riccarton, Lincoln, Pleasant Point, Waimate, Kurow and Cromwell are hosting World Day of Prayer services.
