New diocesan centre opened in Hamilton
(Clearly/Catholic Diocese of Hamilton)
The blessing and official opening of the new Chanel Centre took place on February 17, Shrove Tuesday, with staff and guests enjoying pancakes. Hamilton Bishop Richard Laurenson blessed the premises.
The centre on Clyde Street in Hamilton East is in a Catholic precinct which includes the cathedral, a new hall, St Mary’s Chapel and Marian School, and is across the road from Sacred Heart Girls’ College.
Construction started for the new Chanel Centre on the site of the former Euphrasie House boarding hostel after a ground-breaking in April 2025.
The new Chanel Centre brings the diocese team together in a multi-purpose building.
“Any of those who have visited us at [the former] Chanel Centre will understand how much we are looking forward to being under one roof again. This new space will greatly enhance our ability to live our mission and serve our community,” stated a Hamilton Diocese Facebook post last year.
The new site is approximately 1.5km from the former Chanel Centre in Grey St, Hamilton East. A new cathedral hall was completed in November last year in a $4.3 million project.
