Messy Family Project founders to speak in NZ

Alicia and Mike Hernon (Messy Family Project)

An American couple who run one of the most popular podcasts in the world for Catholic parents will speak in Aotearoa New Zealand next month.

Mike and Alicia Hernon from the Messy Family Project will speak on “Growing a Family Culture” in two talks in Hamilton Diocese. Their talks will be about the reality of family life – how the small, often unseen things in homes shape children, relationships and the kind of family that emerges. This is not through perfection, but through intention, they argue.

The Hernons will be sharing five key elements that help create a family culture that is strong, faith-filled and lived out day by day, Hamilton Diocese stated.

It has also been announced that the Hernons will speak in Christchurch on May 17, as part of a series of talks and events in Australia and New Zealand from May 8-21. Events have also been indicated in Auckland on May 16 and Tōtara Point on May 18.

When Mr and Mrs Hernon started their parenting journey in the early 1990s, they searched for someone to tell them the perfect way to be a parent, but then they finally realised – “there is no perfect way!”

“After launching some of our 10 children and with some still at home and now with grandkids running around, we have found that parents actually never stop learning,” the couple said on their website.

“In 2015, we started a podcast dedicated to simply discussing issues affecting families today. The goal was to encourage parents and get husbands and wives to talk to each other and to be intentional about their parenting.

“Our podcast, which started as a hobby, grew entirely by word of mouth to thousands of families listening monthly. We quickly realised that we were being called to a greater work than simply the podcast. So, in 2018, we left our jobs and started the full-time ministry of the Messy Family Project.

“Our podcast is now one of the top podcasts in the world for Catholic parents and we have loads of free resources available to any family who needs them.”

Mr and Mrs Hernon will speak at St Thomas More Catholic School, Mt Maunganui at 7pm on May 14. They will speak at the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish Hall in Hamilton at 7pm on May 15. All are welcome, with no registration required.

They will also speak at the John Paul II Centre for Life in Christchurch on May 17.
