Cardinal John Dew marked the 50th jubilee of his ordination to priesthood by celebrating Masses at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Wellington on May 9 and 10.

At the May 9 vigil Mass, Cardinal Dew wore the same vestments as when he was ordained – and also used the same chalice for Holy Communion as he did then.

In his homily, Cardinal Dew said the chalice was a reminder for how God’s grace overflows. He said the Gospel calls Catholics to be advocates in their communities, wherever they may live. In thanking people for their support for his 50 years of ministry, Cardinal Dew also said: “None of us who are called to priestly ministry can do this by ourselves.”

After the Mass, there was cake and snacks in the foyer as Cardinal Dew and Archbishop Paul Martin SM celebrated their shared birthday: May 5.

At a jubilee Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Dunedin on May 4, two significant jubilarians were honoured; Bishop Colin Campbell (60 years of priesthood) and Monsignor Vince Walker’s (70 years of priesthood). Bishop Campbell is Bishop Emeritus of Dunedin.

On April 24, diocesan staff gathered at the Pompallier Diocesan Centre in Ponsonby, Auckland, to celebrate 50 years since Bishop Patrick Dunn was ordained to the priesthood on that day in 1976. Bishop Dunn is Bishop Emeritus of Auckland.
