Principal would like more stability in education
Carolyn Massey (Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School)
In a question-and-answer interview, Carolyn Massey, principal of Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School in Flat Bush, was asked if there is anything she would like to be improved in the education or school management sector.
“I think many educators would like to see greater stability and long-term thinking within education,” she said.
“Meaningful change takes time, yet schools are often required to continually adapt to shifting priorities and reforms. At times, education can become overly politicised, when what schools really need is the time and support to embed effective practice well.”
Ms Massey said she would “love to see ongoing investment in teacher wellbeing, learning support and addressing staffing shortages. Schools are being asked to respond to increasingly complex needs, and ensuring schools are well resourced makes a significant difference for students, families and staff alike”.
But despite the changes in the sector, Ms Massey said she is “optimistic about education and the extraordinary people who choose to work in it”. Her school sees education as a shared journey between home, school and parish.
“Being located alongside Sancta Maria College and St Luke’s Catholic Parish strengthens those connections even further and helps create a strong sense of identify and belonging within the wider Sancta Maria community,” she said.
“It’s a special place to lead because there is such a strong culture of care, faith and commitment to one another.”
