Tui Motu editor’s departure marks end of an era

Sr Ann Gilroy, RSJ (Catholic Religious Australia)

The editor of independent Catholic magazine Tui Motu InterIslands, Sr Ann Gilroy RSJ, is to step down at the end of 2026 after more than a decade in the role.

Announcing the move, Tui Motu Foundation chair John Gallaher noted that the era of finding religious to be editors of the magazine is coming to an end.

The magazine’s editors over the years – Fr Michael Hill IC, Fr Kevin Toomey OP and Sr Elizabeth Mackie OP, and Sr Ann – have been supported in the role by their religious orders.

The Foundation, which was established in 2006, invested funds from the founding members of the magazine – the Dominican Sisters, Dominican Friars and Sisters of St Joseph – as well as other religious congregations and individual subscribers.

Interest accumulates on the Foundation’s holdings, with the aim that it would one day support an ongoing editor’s salary. But this has not been needed to this point because of the support from the editors’ religious orders.

The Foundation’s investments will soon need to be used to fund Sr Ann’s replacement, Mr Gallaher said.

Over the years, the accumulated fund has grown to around $800,000. The Foundation is looking to increase the value of its portfolio, Mr Gallaher said.
