New Holy Family mosaic blessed at Hamilton cathedral
(Current of Grace/Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary/Facebook)
At the blessing last month, Bishop Richard Laurenson spoke of his hope that the mosaic would inspire generations of worshippers, inviting them to pause, pray and reflect on the Holy Family. The installation also honours the cathedral’s history, with the original church having featured a mosaic of its own.
The artwork was created by Michael Pervan, director of The Studio of John the Baptist, whose work can be found in churches, cathedrals and schools throughout New Zealand. Developed in collaboration with Fr Darren McFarlane, cathedral parish administrator, the mosaic reflects a shared vision to create a lasting focal point for prayer and contemplation.
Crafted from imported coloured glass tiles, the mosaic comes alive as the light changes throughout the day, revealing new colours, depth and detail. It is a work that invites visitors to return, discovering something new with each passing hour.
The mosaic is on the south-facing wall of the building, between the cathedral and the new parish centre.
