Pacific bishops prepare for Season of Creation

The initiative marks a unified, ecological-spiritual milestone for the Pacific, culminating on the newly approved Feast of Creation on October 4.

CEPAC is a member of the Federation of Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Oceania, which includes the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference.

In a letter addressed to the bishops of the CEPAC region, conference president Archbishop Ryan Jimenez of Guam emphasised the vital importance of this period for the Pacific community.

“May this Season of Creation deepen our gratitude for God’s gift of creation and renew our commitment to the care of our common home, in the spirit of Laudato Si’ and our shared mission as shepherds of the Church in the Pacific,” Archbishop Jimenez said.

To support communities in their spiritual and pastoral preparation, CEPAC has made dedicated resources available. Fr Ben McKenna, in collaboration with the Laudato Si’ Team, has prepared a specialised booklet containing weekly reflections and meditations designed specifically for use throughout the month-long observance.

Additionally, official guidelines provided by the Laudato Si’ Office in Rome have been attached to accompany these reflections.

Archbishop Jimenez has requested that all bishops in CEPAC review these materials and distribute them widely across their local networks. The resources aim to foster a deep, localised engagement with environmental stewardship, aligning the diverse islands of the Pacific in a singular mission to protect their fragile and beautiful ecosystem.

Archbishop Jimenez is also president of the Federation of Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Oceania.
