Josephite companions consider ‘Seeds of Hope’

Meaningful and thoughtfully prepared prayer was a part of each day. A paragraph of Scripture was read three times, with time to reflect on a word or phrase that caught attention.

Sr Ann Gilroy RSJ from New Zealand was the keynote speaker. Her presentation was titled “Our Prophetic Stance is Inclusion – Let the yeast rise among us”.  

She broke open Scripture, helping those at the conference to understand this in an inclusive way, with one passage being Jesus’ parable of the fig tree. She also explored the Sisters of Saint Joseph Chapter statement artwork, helping those at the conference to understand the symbolism and connection with “let the yeast rise among us”.

After Sr Ann’s presentation, the conference addressed key questions in a synodal way: “What makes my heart sing when I think of inclusion? What do I see as the challenges?” 

Groups were asked to record what was emerging, converging, tensions and how the Holy Spirit is inviting. Some themes were the equality of dignity and worth in every being, recognising everyone has a purpose and becoming more aware of blind spots.

Representatives from Queensland, New Zealand, Victoria, Josephite Companion Leadership Team and Peru shared how their group connects and responds as companions.

These presentations showed the various creative and practical ways people found to respond to the specific needs of the communities they serve.
