First Marist Laity Convention of Oceania hosted in Fiji

Nearly 100 representatives from Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna, Samoa, Tonga, Australia and New Zealand were part of this historic moment, along with about 30 Marist religious.

The theme of the gathering from August 17-21 was “Marist Laity Formation: Spirituality and Charism in Synodality”. Participants received input on the historical development of Marist laity, tracing its origins and growth, as well as the evolving role of lay Marists in the wider Marist family.

There was also formation on Marist spirituality and charism.

The gathering helped participants clarify some key elements about their identity and mission. Among such elements was the reality that Marist laity are co-responsible for the mission, not passive recipients. Marist religious are companions and supporters, walking alongside the laity rather than as leaders.

It was also clarified that collaboration is the way forward – working with one another rather than for one another.

Those at the gathering in Suva gained a revived awareness of being one Marist family, united in Mary’s way of simplicity, presence and service.

Participants returned home strengthened in their vocation, and eager to continue building vibrant Marist communities across the Pacific.

The SM Bulletin also reported that former New Zealand provincial Fr Tim Duckworth SM has been appointed to a three-year term in the province of Europe. He joins the Marist community and mission of Notre Dame de France in London.
